Public Data & Accountability
Starting in 2018, our Public Data Accountability Project has combined data from multiple online sources into a single analyzable, live-updating database with over 1,300,000 Shelby County court cases including charges, bonds, sentences, bookings, and much more
Pretrial Detention
Pretrial detention is exactly what it says: pretrial, meaning that people are being punished before being found guilty of any crime. In this analysis, we look at the state of pretrial detention in Shelby County.
Money Bail
There has been a lot of misinformation about bail spreading through our community, especially after Just City and its partners have worked with Shelby County government to reform our bail system into a more equitable and (spoiler alert) effective system. This analysis takes a look at some of these narratives to find out whether they are based in data or fear-mongering anecdotes.
Sentencing
We asked ourselves a very important question: “Who is tracking criminal sentences and their fairness in Shelby County?”, and to our surprise, it seems that the answer is…. no one. Using our data on sentencing since 2017, we look at disparities in case dispositions and sentences among members of our community.
